Eagle Scout Constructs New Observation Platform for Lake Knapp

By Vicki Paulas, Assistant Director

Construction is underway for a new observation blind that will replace the old East Blind on Lake Knapp thanks to Eagle Scout candidate Robert Mayo. Lake Knapp is a 24-acre man made freshwater impoundment located in the center of the CBEC property. A duck observation blind that was located on the east side of the lake in the mid 1980s had fallen into disrepair and had not been used by the public since 2003. Thanks to Robert and his sponsors, that’s about to change!

“No matter what season, whether you’re a bird watcher or a photographer, the lake is a great place to observe and photograph waterfowl, wading birds, insects, reptiles and sunsets. When Robert came to CBEC looking to take on a project for his Eagle Scout Badge, I had just the project in mind. I’ve had other Eagle Scouts shy away from large projects before, but I could tell Robert was up for the challenge.” said Vicki Paulas, CBEC Assistant Director.

Under Vicki’s guidance, Robert decided to construct an observation platform for the enjoyment of the 20,000+ visitors to CBEC. He developed a social media fundraising campaign on the GoFundMe.com site and went to local businesses and civic clubs to give presentations about the project and the need for the new structure at CBEC. “We encourage the kids to choose a project at CBEC that will benefit the most people and also fill a critical need at the center. In turn, the scouts gain real-world experience in fundraising, project management, public speaking, and teamwork – all of which are not an easy things to master as a 15–17 year old” said Paulas.

Due to all his efforts, Robert raised a little over $4,400 for the completion of the new platform. We would like to thank the following sponsors who helped Robert make this project a reality for CBEC: Shawn Cahall at 84 Lumber Store #0909, Arnold, MD; Kent Island American Legion Post #278; Kent Island Elks Lodge; Grasonville VFW 7464; The Mayo Family; Boy Scout Troop #278; Wye Bible Church; Chesapeake Hearing Center Inc.; Mike & Pamela Brown; Patricia & Ronald Moore; Daniel and Michelle O’Brien; Daniel and Chris Bowman; Marsha Duncan; Kate Ruby; and Patricia McCarthy.
